We believe that part of our remit as a publisher is to encourage creative expression, written creative expression in the area we serve. So in 2012 we launched a short story competition to coincide with the Langport Festival.
We offer cash prizes each year and the winners are announced – and their stories read – during the Langport Festival week which is usually the first week of June.
We do not believe in having local authors on the judging panel. Why? Authors wear their prejudices on their sleeves. They have a tendency to like works written in their own image. It is frankly, entirely natural that they should. So instead we decided that our competition would be judged by a panel of readers, rather than a panel of writers.
Geographically the spread of our competition seems to grow every year. From being a local Langport based competition we have now had entrants from Plymouth to Cheshire, Scarborough and even from Kincardine and West Sussex. News of the competition is clearly spreading! In fact in 2015 we had our very first international entrant from the USA….
The 2016 competition is now closed for entries. Our judges are judging and the results will be announced at a special finals evening during the Langport Festival.
